Hints for Slide CRR 04.
Although the basic tissue composition of this specimen should be obvious, identifying the anatomical site from which it was taken may take some thoughtful deduction.
- Note that the bulk of this specimen consists of acidophilic fibrous material.
- Individual fibers are large (several tens of microns in diameter) and uniform in size.
- All of these fibers have been cut in cross section.
- What tissue elements give the appearance of acidophilic fibers? (Hint: collagen, all three types of muscle, nerves)
- What special features distinguish these different fibrous tissue elements?
- Which of these comprises most of this specimen?
- Note the two long sides of this specimen (1, 2) have natural surfaces, while the ends (3, 4) have been cut.
- What is the tissue composition of the natural surfaces?
- Can you use the structure of these surfaces to deduce site of origin for this specimen?
Hints on the next page are a bit more pointed. Don't look unless you are stuck.
