Notes
The anterior pituitary contains a variety of endocrine cell types. In traditional histology, these are named according to their affinity for basic and acidic stains. In this image, basophils appear dark purple, acidophils appear rich pink, and chromophobes appear pale (poorly stained).
Cells of different types tend to cluster together. The image above includes mostly acidophils and scattered chromophobes, with a few basophils near the right side.
Several vascular sinusoids appear in this image, as well as capillaries whose presence is indicated the small, thin nuclei of endothelial cells between the cords and clusters of endocrine cells.
