The mucosa of the vagina consists of stratified squamous epithelium overlying highly vascular fibromuscular tissue in which bundles of smooth muscle are interwoven with fibrous connective tissue. Distinguishing smooth muscle from collagen is facilitated by trichrome stain, as shown here.
