Stephen Hazelrigg, M.D., ’83, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Hazelrigg is professor and division chair of cardiothoracic surgery at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. He has been involved in the development of thoracoscopic surgery since its inception. He taught the procedure in the early 1990s for the Board of Thoracic Surgery and has published extensively on its many facets (more than 100 articles and book chapters). He is editor of the cardiothoracic textbook minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery. He is one of the early developers of lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema and has the only approved program in the state; one of only seven approved programs in the country. This program has been a real difference maker in the lives of people with end-stage emphysema.
