Anthony Miksanek, M.D., ’80, Family Medicine

Dr. Miksanek

While at SIU School of Medicine, Dr. Miksanek met his wife Arlene Miksanek, MD (Class of 1982). They have three children. He was the recipient of a National Health Service Corps scholarship. After finishing his residency in the Chicago area, he settled in Benton, Ill. (population 7,000). For more than 20 years, Dr. Miksanek has served Benton and Franklin County as a family physician — half of that time in solo private practice. He has made lots of house calls to patients courtesy of a 1987 Jeep Wrangler. For five years, Tony wrote a column ("Diary From a Week in Practice") for the journal American Family Physician chronicling the experiences of a small town family doctor. He is the author of 2 collections of short stories as well as numerous essays, reviews, and works of creative non¬fiction. He is co-editor of the New York University Literature, Arts, & Medicine Database. He is a part-time instructor at John A. Logan College in Carterville where he teaches courses in literature and human anatomy /physiology.
