Matt Winkleman, M.D., ’02, Family Medicine
Dr. Winkleman, '02, exemplifies a new generation serving southern Illinois. He and his wife, Laura, completed their family medicine residencies at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. Matt received the AAFP Excellence in Graduate Medical Education award. Following residency, the couple joined Primary Care Group in Harrisburg. The Group was formed in 1997 through the unification of many doctors’ practices, including many SIU SOM alumni: Larry Jones, M.D., ’76 (founder of the clinic), Steve Knight, M.D., ’81, Shannon Rider, M.D., ’99, and Michael York, M.D., ’89. These physicians have been involved in Saline County for more than 25 years. All these alumni are certainly fulfilling the mission of their alma mater.
Since returning to his hometown of Harrisburg, Matt has served as president of the medical staff at Harrisburg Medical Center. He serves on the alumni society board of governors and frequently volunteers as a preceptor to family medicine students. Both Dr. Winklemans are very active in their local church. Dr. Winkleman coaches T-ball and soccer and serves on the SIU School of Medicine Alumni Society Board of Governors. The Winklemans have four children, Sam, Luke, Sarah and Noah born last November.
