| The SIU School of Medicine offers a broad range of learning opportunities to prepare students for a variety of medical careers. An important educational experience for some students is participation in basic or clinical research. The Medical Student Research Policy (download pdf file) was created to encourage qualified students to become involved in substantive projects and to set guidelines for elective credit for research activity. |
|
| Graduate programs are available in Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry that provide training leading to either the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. Information for these programs is available on the Pharmacology site and the MMIBC site. |
|
| The Mentored Professional Enrichment Experience (MPEE) is an optional eight-week elective between the first and second years of medical school. MPEE is an opportunity for SIU-SOM medical students to pursue interests in research and career development. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, an initial question is developed, a method to obtain an answer is designed, clear goals and objectives to achieve an outcome are established and the conclusions of this work are presented before an audience of faculty and peers. This is an opportunity complete with the possibility of obtaining funding to defray expenses during the summer session. More information> |
|
| The Directory of Research Mentors provides a list of faculty and their research focus,
who are willing to mentor medical students interested in research. Mentors are available for MPEE participants and other students interested in research. View Directory > |

CDC
Foundation Invites Applications for 2006 Applied Epidemiology
Fellowship The CDC Foundation's Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
at CDC provides medical students with a hands-on training
experience in epidemiology and public health. Eight competitively
selected third and fourth-year medical students from around
the United States will spend up to one full year at the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.
While at CDC, they will participate in an orientation to
CDC, applied epidemiology, the national public health system,
and the role of physicians in that system. With the guidance
of experienced CDC epidemiologists, they will perform epidemiologic
analyses and research, design public health interventions,
and assist in field investigations.
Funded by a grant from Pfizer Inc., the fellowship will
complement and build on the success of CDC's Epidemic Intelligence
Service (EIS), a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in applied
epidemiology and public health, as well as the shorter,
relatively unstructured six- to eight-week CDC epidemiology
elective currently open to medical and veterinary students.
Areas of concentration for the fellowship include birth
defects, injury, chronic disease, genomics, infectious disease,
environmental health, public health policy, and reproductive
health. The fellowship includes a stipend for living expenses.
For complete fellowship program information and application
materials, see the CDC Foundation Web site.
