Fringe Benefit Rates

Fringe benefits must be budgeted in grants for all SIUSOM personnel who have salary being charged to the grant. Standard fringe benefits are not budgeted for graduate assistants or student workers (see below).

SIUSOM's Facilities & Administrative (F&A, or indirect) cost rates, set by the federal government for the period 7/1/12 - 6/30/16, has established all fringe benefit rates --medical (including health, dental, and life insurance) and retirement/Medicare - as a single percentage of salary.

Primary Care Fee

Principal Investigators/Project Directors also need to budget for 50% of their GA’s Primary Care Fee (PCF) for each semester the GA will be employed during the life of the grant.  The PCF cannot be prorated for a GA working a partial period of a semester. From consulting Student Health Services, OSPA’s best estimate of the relevant 50% budget figures for proposals are reflected in the tables below.

Graduate Student Tuition

Current and projected GA tuition rates can be found at the links below.  For a GA position, the tuition charge should be equivalent to  the resident rate for 9 credit hrs. for the Fall and Spring semesters, and equivalent to 3 credit hrs. for the summer.  Tuition should be included in the budget for each semester the student is supported on the proposal.  For assignments of shorter duration than an entire semester, the tuition charged will be prorated according to the duration of the contract.

The University provides projections for GA tuition rates to be used in proposal budgets that include graduate students and meet the criteria in the SIU Tuition on Research Grants Policy. These rates are estimates based on a 3% annual increase and will be reviewed and revised periodically.

Graduate Assistantship Salaries

GA Salary rates can be found in the links below.  A graduate assistant supported by an external grant is paid the rate of the unit of the principal investigator.  Units without established rates pay the rate of the unit in which the student is enrolled.

The standard graduate assistantship is one-half time (50%). Budget spreadsheets should be set up to use the full-time (100%) rate at half-time (50% or 0.5) effort.

*Rates for FY2013 & FY 2014 are estimates provided for budget purposes, rates are subject to change.

Postdoctoral Fellows

The minimum salary for postdocs is the 100% doctoral rate for graduate assistants in the same department or college.
