It is estimated that there are around 12 million people in the United States now who are cancer survivors. This 12 million represents individual alive with cancer regardless of where they are in the illness trajectory - newly diagnosed, in treatment, post-treatment, suffering a recurrence, living with or dying of progressing illness.
While the majority of survivors are doing quite well with respect to their overall quality of life by a few years post-treatment—and they continue to improve over time, a subset of around 30 percent of survivors continue to struggle with a number of emotional and physical problems and have a poorer quality of life. Survivors experience a wide range of long-term or late effects, such as pain, fatigue, and fear of recurrence of their disease, and in these survivors the issues don’t go away, even at 11 years post-diagnosis.
The goal of the Side-By-Side program is to help individuals and their families move forward following treatment for cancer. This goal is to encourage individuals to move beyond surviving cancer to thriving despite cancer. Programs that focus on wellness include psychosocial support for individuals and their families, Yoga, exercise programs, Reike therapy, art therapy, support groups, journaling classes, nutrition classes and meditation.
