Summer Lab Internships Offered by SIU Cancer Institute
College students who plan a career in medicine or research with a focus on cancer research will have the opportunity to learn basic lab techniques with supervision through a summer internship program at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute (SCCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The internship is available to three students on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to those who plan to go into medicine and with an intent on working in cancer research.
“We view this as both an opportunity for students and our investment in individuals who may focus their medical career on cancer research as a result of the positive experience that they have with the Institute,” said Dr. K. Thomas Robbins, SCCI director.
The deadline to apply for the internship is May 1, 2009. The term of the internships is May 15 to August 15, 2009. Interested candidates should submit their college transcripts, two letters of reference from instructors and a resume along with a personal statement letter explaining current studies, activities and future goals.
Materials should be sent to Morris Cooper, Ph.D, professor and chair of medical microbiology, immunology and cell biology, SIU School of Medicine, P.O. Box 9626 Springfield, Ill. 62794-9626. The preferred method of submission is by using PDF formatted documents that are emailed to mcooper@siumed.edu.
The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU is focusing the medical school’s efforts in cancer research, physician and public education, and treatment for patients from across central and southern Illinois. Its new three-story building, dedicated in July, will consolidate SIU’s multi-disciplinary cancer clinics along with research and outreach service programs. The Institute’s Web site is www.siumed.edu/cancer and its phone number is 217-545-6000.
