The Tissue Banking Facility (TBF) is a service provided by the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU to obtain surgically resected tissue while safeguarding all aspects of patient care. The Springfield Committee for Research Involving Human Subjects (SCRIHS) authorizes our TB Facility to obtain tissue for research that would otherwise be resected for medical purposes and discarded.
This facility offers several advantages over other national tissue repositories. They include:
- Tissue can be handled by sterile techniques if requested by the investigator.
- Tissue is processed immediately and can be delivered fresh.
- Tissue is processed according to researcher specifications.
- The location of the TBF at SIU is convenient.
- Specimens may be picked up by the investigator from the TBF to avoid shipping charges.
- Pathologists from Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital assist in the tissue collection.
- Surgical pathology reports are provided for each specimen.
Skilled technologists work with surgeons and pathologists to maximize the scientific value of the acquired tissue without compromising diagnostic processing. In addition, the TBF provides investigators access to histopathologic parameters available from the final diagnostic report while preserving individual patient confidentiality.
Tissues may be obtained fresh (including sterile for establishment of cell culture), frozen in liquid nitrogen, embedded in the cryopreservative O.C.T, or fixed in formalin and paraffin embedded.
