Clinical Trials
The Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine participates in clinical research through a variety of avenues. The Cancer Institute supports research initiated by our own physicians as well as industry sponsored trials. However, we are able to reach a greater number of patients by participating in both the Central Illinois Community Clinical Oncology Program (CICCOP) and the University of Chicago Phase II Consortium. The CCOP program was created over 20 years ago by the National Cancer Institute to facilitate physician involvement in cancer clinical trials. This program enables patients to obtain access to clinical trials within their own communities and often through their own physicians. The Phase II Consortium is a collaboration of oncologists who work through the National Cancer Institute, the pharmaceutical industry, and various affiliate cancer centers across the US to bring new novel treatments to patients. Access to clinical trials creates more options for our patients.
