January, 1985: Chaplain Roy Nash recommended to Mr. James Rigby, COO, that Memorial Medical Center needs an Ethics Committee. Mr. Rigby requested Chaplain Nash to organize a committee to study the need and to bring back a recommendation. An Ethics Study Committee (ESC) was organized. ESC made a comprehensive review of hospital ethics committees (HECs) and began drafting a set of Guidelines and Procedures. June, 1985: Dr. Keith Wichterman was designated for ESC as liaison with Executive Committee of Medical Staff. July, 1985: The Proposal Statement for a Human Values and Ethics Committee was approved by Administration and Executive Committee of Medical Staff, but limited to the continuation of its activities as only the ESC. September, 1985: Dr. Keith Wichterman selected as Chairperson and Chaplain Nash as Vice-Chairperson. June, 1986: Began a monthly ethics case review. July, 1987: Human Values and Ethics Committee (HVEC) approved as a special committee by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff. Began ethics consultation service. January, 1995: Opening of the Clinical Ethics Center .
