In support and promotion of the highest standards
of ethics in medicine, the Clinical Ethics Center provides ethics consultation,
education, policy development and review, research in bioethics and community
outreach for Memorial Health System and SIU, School of Medicine.
 |
Ethics Consultation: The
Ethics Consultation Service was
reorganized in 1995 with the opening of the Clinical Ethics Center.
The Center provides primary staffing to the Ethics Consultation Service
and initiates a liaison function to selected units. Consultations
are conducted by trained clinical bioethicists who provide a prompt
response to requests for assistance in dealing with ethical problems
or questions arising in the care of patients. The purpose of an ethics
consultation is to improve processes and outcomes of patient care
and service. |
 |
Education: The Center
develops and supports educational programs in clinical medical ethics
for house staff, medical staff, nursing staff, and other health care
providers. Activities include case conferences, unit rounds, and continuing
educational programs. The Center hosts educational
conferences for healthcare professionals, patients, family members
and the community. Please visit our conference section for titles
of past conferences and any future conferences that we may have. |
 |
Policy Development
and Review: The Center in coordination with the Human Values
and Ethics Committee has responsibility for developing and reviewing
policies and procedures that reflect
a concern for ethics in healthcare. |
 |
Research in Bioethics: The
Center is committed to improving the care of patients through identification,
analysis and systematic study of ethical uncertainties arising in
the clinical setting and delivery structures of health care, as well
as in emerging new technologies and scientific advances in medicine.
The Center provides regular research updates and literature reviews
relevant to the Human Values and Ethics Committee. |

|
Community Outreach:
The Center provides knowledgeable speakers to address community organizations,
religious congregations or professional associations in regards to
advance directives and
bioethical issues which may include but is not limited to health disparities,
organ donation and impact of culture and diversity of values on decision-making.
