DESCRIPTION
Hospitals, nursing
homes, and other health care organizations are finding that there
is a pressure to establish ethics committees and to conduct ethical
review of cases. Of the many functions that ethics committees
might perform-policy development, education, and case review-case
review is by far the most compelling and difficult activity for
ethics committees to undertake within their institutions. Because
ethics consultation places the ethics committee's credibility
and expertise with respect to medical ethics matters on the line,
there is an understandable ambivalence about case review. This
ambivalence in part is rated to the lack of access to trained
clinical bioethics and to the relative lack of expertise among
ethics committee members about the field of bioethics. This course
is designed with a focus on practical issues and questions involved
in developing a format for case review, basic skills and knowledge
necessary for conducting ethics case reviews, and directions for
establishing a structure for successful ethics consultation services.
It should also give participants suggestions regarding how to
utilize effectively ethics consultation.
