Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Community Service Program “The mission of the SIU School of Medicine is to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research, and service to the community.” SIU School of Medicine implemented its new strategic plan in March 2007. The new plan featured a subtle, but significant, revision to the School’s mission statement – the addition of the phrase “service to the community” to the list of mission areas. This step was taken to acknowledge community service as complementary to the more traditional mission areas of education, patient care, and research. While it has always been true that the SIU School of Medicine is intrinsically committed to serving the community, the addition of community service as a mission area makes explicit and reaffirms this commitment.
