Message from the Dean

Dr. Dorsey

Part of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, our mission is to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research, and service to the community. The School of Medicine has been a key player in the development of a regional academic medical center in Springfield and at the same time we have become an international leader in medical education. We're based in Springfield and Carbondale and we work closely with affiliated community hospitals in Carbondale, Decatur, Quincy and Springfield.

Our physician faculty provides tertiary medical care, including a full-range of services in several dozen specialty clinics. Patients come from throughout Illinois and the Midwest to our clinical facilities in Springfield and our Family Practice Centers in Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy. More than 440,000 patient visits occurred last year. Our physician faculty, known as SIU HealthCare, also provides specialty care and consultative services through 99 outreach programs in 50 other towns.

A university - and therefore its medical school - has as its fundamental purpose the advancement of knowledge through research for the benefit of society. Our research covers a wide range of basic and clinical sciences. The Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU and the Springfield Combined Laboratory Facility both will enable us to conduct more research that will benefit the region.

We're proud of the caring and competent physicians we've trained and we're working to address the emerging needs of health care delivery in the 21st century. We aim to be the best in medical education, deliver the highest quality health care in the region, and strengthen our biomedical research efforts in neuroscience, aging and cancer.
