D.O. Internship

SIU Family Practice Center

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program-Carbondale is accredited by both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This program has an affiliation agreement with The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, for post-graduate medical education. This allows D.O. Interns and Residents to receive certification by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.

D.O. Interns and Residents are expected to utilize their osteopathic skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat patients in the clinics and hospital. The Faculty of the OMM Department of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine provides regularly scheduled lectures on Osteopathic Medicine.

Although D.O. Students currently apply separately for the internship year, it is expected and required that anyone matching with our program be committed to the full three-year training. We do not offer the one-year rotating internship to those who will not continue for the remaining two years of Family Medicine training at our program.

Fourth-year D.O. students may apply to our program using either the AMA or the AOA match, but strongly we encourage D.O. students to apply using the American Osteopathic Association Intern/Resident Match Program to ensure that they will be eligible for dual certification.
