The SIU Department of Family and Community Medicine is a group of people, spread across the southwestern half of the State of Illinois, united by a common vision and passion for the health of the people we serve.  Faculty members and community teaching physicians in our department have common goals of providing excellent medical care and improving the health status of the people of Illinois through educational and research programs.  Two principles define our common goals:
  1. The Patient-centered Medical Home
  2. Tempered Independence
In communities throughout Illinois, our department has developed university-administered, community-based programs that are organized by a strong central department that is closely connected with the SIU School of Medicine. Our department retains a local tempered independence in order to best meet the healthcare needs of our own communities and the educational needs of their learners. We have established four family medicine residency training programs which collectively:
  • Graduate 25 family physicians each year
  • Support a medical student education program which coordinates
    • Training in Family Medicine for 288 SIU medical students
    • Provides a nationally-recognized Family Medicine six week core clerkship
  • Provide two sports medicine fellowships
  • Have support from a central core office for administration and finance
  • Collaborate on research and program development
  • Intimately embrace and implement health information technology
  • Have a collaborative arrangement with the SIU College of Applied Sciences and Arts to train 24 physician assistant students each year
  • Provide six model family medicine offices to their patients
  • Provide two maternal and child health offices
  • Have numerous contacts and collaborations with community health agencies
  • Are jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (MD) and the American Osteopathic Association (DO), through the Postgraduate Training Institute of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.
