The SIU Department of Family and Community Medicine is a group of people, spread across the southwestern half of the State of Illinois, united by a common vision and passion for the health of the people we serve. Faculty members and community teaching physicians in our department have common goals of providing excellent medical care and improving the health status of the people of Illinois through educational and research programs. Two principles define our common goals:

  1. The Patient-Centered Medical Home
  2. Tempered Independence

In communities throughout Illinois, our department has developed university-administered, community-based programs that are organized by a strong central department that is closely connected with the SIU School of Medicine. Our department retains a local tempered independence in order to best meet the healthcare needs of our own communities and the educational needs of their learners. We have established a strong family medicine education program which collectively:

The mission of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research, and service to the community.
