The 31st annual Camp COCO will host over 160 children with cancer and related blood disorders during its one-week session June 26-July 1, 2016. Camp COCO is a program of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics in Springfield. Camp is held at the Timber Pointe Outdoor Conference Center on Lake Bloomington. The theme for this year’s camp is “Camp COCO Superheroes !”
The campers, ages 6 – 17, from downstate Illinois. The youngest campers may bring an older sibling. SIU’s Pediatrics staff members volunteer for the week to provide medical care and share time with their patients. The campers get a second chance at the childhood they have lost during the camp’s week of activities, giving them a time to just have fun. It costs nearly $700 per camper to attend camp, but families to not have to pay to send a child to camp thanks to generous donors, businesses, civic organizations and clubs. The annual Camp COCO Charity Golf Outing is one of camp's major fundraisers.
