About Men's Night Out
Men’s health screenings and information will be the focus of the 6th annual men’s health event, “SIU Men’s Night Out” held in September, featuring Lou Brock, former St. Louis Cardinal’s left fielder and member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

Part of Prostate Cancer Awareness month, the educational event for men begins at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25, at Springfield High School, 101 S. Lewis St., Springfield. The program is presented by the Prostate Center of the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU.

Brock, one of major league baseball’s all-time hits and stolen base leaders, had 3,023 lifetime hits and is the 2nd all-time stolen base leader with 938 lifetime stolen bases. He was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1985. Brock began his 19-year career with the Chicago Cubs and was traded three years later to the St. Louis Cardinals. During his 16 years with the Cardinals, he batted a combined .391 in three World Series and batted a combined .375 in six All-Star games. He also batted over .300 seven times in his career. He is the only player in the history of Major League Baseball to have an award named in his honor while still an active player. The Lou Brock Award is granted to the National League player with the most stolen bases each year.

The program begins with a free dinner and health information and screening opportunities by various health care organizations and dinner. There will be sign-up opportunities for prostate screenings and autographed baseballs and grills as door prizes. All participants will receive a complimentary souvenir tee shirt.
At 6:15 p.m., the educational program will begin. Dr. Thomas Tarter, Associate Professor of Urology and Director of the Prostate Center, will lead the event and introduce the health services available to men at the SIU School of Medicine. Talks will continue with Dr. Andrew J. Varney, associate professor of internal medicine, who will speak on general men’s health topics including diet, exercise and heart health. He will be followed by Dr. Tom Robbins, professor and director of the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU, who will talk on the opening of the new Cancer Institute. This will be followed by Dr. Tobias Kohler, MD, MPH, professor, who will talk on erectile dysfunction and infertility in men. The evening will end with Brock who will speak on his baseball career.

Prostate cancer strikes over 220,000 men in the United States each year. One man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Early detection and treatment is one of the best tools for treatment. Screening that includes a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test combined with a prostate exam has led to cases being diagnosed earlier, often leading to a cure and increased survival.
