Mac Carbondale Email Configuration for Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1
Note: There is no preconfigured installer for Mac OS 10.x.
Upgrading to Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 from Mozilla 2.x client
New Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 Setup
Upgrading from Mozilla 2.x Email Client
- Download and extract the Thunderbird 3.1 installer.
- Drag the Mozilla Thunderbird application to your Applications folder on the Mac.
- Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
- All old settings should be imported successfully.
New Mozilla Thunderbird Installation
- Download and extract the Thunderbird 3.1 installer.
- Drag the Mozilla Thunderbird application to your Applications folder on the Mac.
- Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
- Select "Don't import anything" in the Import Wizard window.
- Click Continue.
- In Setup Type window select standard setup and put a check next to "Use Thunderbird as default mail application."
- Click on Finish.
- In Mail Account Setup window enter the information requested (note: uncheck Remember password), for example:
- Click on the Manual Setup button and enter the following Account settings:
- Server Name: mail.som.siu.edu
- Authentication method: Normal password
- Server Settings: Just mark it as deleted
- Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the Account Settings window and click on Edit and set or verify the following settings:
- Server Name: smtp.som.siu.edu
- Authentication method: Normal password
- An Add Security Exception window will pop up. Check the box next to "Permanently store this exception" and click on "Confirm Security Exception".

- Configuration Steps to finalize your SIUMED account setup
Directory Server
Go to Window Menu-->Address Book
Go to File Menu-->New-->LDAP Directory
Enter the following:
Name: SIUMED
Hostname: ldap.som.siu.edu
Base DN: ou=People,o=SIUMED,c=US
Importing SIUMED Certificate Authority
Go to http://www.siumed.edu/som.cacert and save the file to your desktop.
Open Thunderbird and go to Tools Menu-->Account Settings and click on the Security selection under your email profile. Click on "View Certificates".

Click on the "Authorities" tab and then click "Import".

Browse to the "som" certificate that you saved to your Desktop and click "Open". At this point you will be prompted to put a check next to the items for which you want to trust the "som" certificate authority. Check all 3 items and click OK.

Other Miscellaneous Settings
- Go to Tools Menu-->Account Settings-->Composition & Addressing
- In the drop down box for "Automatically quote the original message when replying Then", select "start my reply above the quote" from the drop down box.
- Click the button for Use a different LDAP server and select Directory Server: SIUMED from the drop down box.
