TEMPORARY JOB ASSIGNMENTS
"EXTRA HELP" positions are used at SIU School of Medicine for the purpose of fulfilling a temporary staffing need. Extra Help positions are used in a wide variety of areas.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Extra Help positions may be needed for as little as one day or as long as six months and can be full or part-time (less than 37.5 hours per week). The rules of the State Universities Civil Service System do not provide an opportunity for Extra Help appointments to automatically be converted into Civil Service; however, Extra Help employees are invited to apply and compete for permanent vacancies.
One of our more unique types of Extra Help Appointment is the STANDARDIZED PATIENT. Find out more about these "actors" hired on both the Springfield and Carbondale campuses of SIU School of Medicine.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Persons interested in Extra Help positions may apply between 8:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless a specific posting specifies different days or times.
In person: at the Office of Human Resources, 327 W. Calhoun Avenue; parking available on the street or at visitors meters in SIU parking lots across Calhoun Street and immediately to the East of our building (drop box available at front entrance to building after hours)
By fax: fill out an Application for Civil Service Employment and send to: (217) 545-1058
By mail to: P.O. Box 19601, Springfield, IL 62794-9601. Applicants for Extra-Help employment will often be scheduled to meet with an Employment Officer to assess their skills, experiences, and interests. Applicants that are interested in clerical positions may be given a typing test to determine level of keyboarding skill.
THE REFERRAL AND HIRING PROCESS
Departments with temporary staffing needs notify HR by specifying the employment category, skills and amount of experience that are needed. Information gathered during the applicant's screening interview with HR is matched against the requirements. Selected applicants may be referred for an individual interview with the hiring department. Hire offers may only be made by the Office of Human Resources.
Most Extra Help positions require a background investigation as a condition of employment.
