PubMed Interface Has a New Look & Features

(Nov. 5, 2009) PubMed has released a new interface. The database remains the same, but search features have been moved to different locations and, in some cases, enhanced.

new PubMed screen

From the Main search screen (pictured on left) a search box is easily accessible to type in search terms, authors’ names, keywords, journal titles, etc.

The Go button has been replaced by the Search button.

Menus at the bottom of the main page include links to other features:

  • Under the PubMed Tools menu is the Single Citation Matcher, Clinical Queries and Topic Specific Queries.
  • Under More Resources is the link for searching within the MeSH Database as well as links to the Journals Database and the Clinical Trials database.

PubMed advanced search link A link to the Advanced Search screen provides access to your Search History, searching using different fields such as Author, MeSH, Publication Date, etc., and the Limits options (language, human, ages, publication types, etc.).

The Display Settings menu (found on the Results pages above the list of references) has been modified.

PubMed display menu

This menu includes the following display format choices:

  • Summary,
  • Summary text,
  • Abstract,
  • Abstract text,
  • Medline,
  • XML and
  • PMID List.

Other options under the Display Settings menu include Items per Page and Sort By options.

PubMed abstract display

The Abstract display includes expandable sections for supplemental information such as:

  • Publication Types,
  • MeSH Terms,
  • Substances,
  • Grant Support,
  • Secondary Source IDs,
  • Personal Name as Subject, and
  • LinkOut data.

You can choose to have these sections (except LinkOut) expanded by default using My NCBI Preferences.

All LinkOut icons display in the top right for a single record display and below the abstract when viewing multiple records.

Send To box

The Send to menu, also found above the list of references to the right, should be used to send citations to a File, Clipboard, Collections, E-mail or to Order.

From the Send to File select the MEDLINE format to download records for use with reference management software.

NOTE: To print from PubMed use your browser print function. The Print option has been eliminated from the Send to menu.

PubMed Clipboard

After items are sent to the Clipboard from the Send to menu, the Clipboard link will appear next to this menu.

Continue to use the link to Pubmed @ SIUSM from the Library’s home page to display our Library holdings.
