This set of data began as a Needs Assessment Report for Gallatin County School District authored by Ainon Mizan, Sharon Hull and Tess Ford.\n\n\nThe Center for Rural Health and Social Services Development then developed a series of Microsoft Word documents providing similar data for most of the counties included here.\n\n\nSubsequently, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute provided funding for a series of graduate assistants to develop and populate the Excel Spreadsheets for all counties included here. Sharonda Lewis and Edith Ngoma are the graduate students whose work is represented in all the detail provided in the Excel format.

This website contains data collected over several years, and updated recently, through efforts in the Center for Rural Health and Social Services Development [[CRHSSD|http://www.siu.edu/~crhssd/index.htm]], the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute [[PSPPI|http://www.siu.edu/~ppi/index.htm]], and the School of Medicine [[SIUSOM|www.siumed.edu]] at [[Southern Illinois University|www.siu.edu]].\n\nThe data contained in this website includes county-level data on a variety of health and health-related indicators that are not readily available on a county-by-county basis. The data has been compiled from publicly available data sources, which are referenced in the materials contained here. Data exist for over 20 counties in downstate Illinois, and more are planned for addition to the site in coming months.\n\nThis website will be a useful resource for anyone writing grants, reports, or doing research on health and health-related issues in downstate Illinois. \n\nUsing the menu bar to the left, you may navigate to a particular county, a particular set of indicators or to the master data set, and will find a set of options that include both Microsoft Word documents and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The data in the spreadsheets is readily accessible for statistical analysis, sorting or other data mining uses.
