HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS: CURRENT LEGAL ISSUES

DESCRIPTION

This elective is intended to provide students with an overview of legal issues that bear upon the structure, organization, and operation of health care organizations. By attending seminars, students will gain insights into legal aspects of their administration, management, and operation of health systems and associations.

OBJECTIVES

1. Using assigned readings, students will participate with Medical Humanities faculty in tutorials that focus on a variety of issues including, but not limited to, the following:

a) The legal organization and structure of health care organizations.
b) Legal issues that arise in the context of management and administration of health care organizations.
c) Current legal developments regarding delivery of health care services.

2. Students will be able to identify and explain current legal issues that are being addressed by health care organizations.

EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated on their discussion of assigned readings in tutorial activities conducted by Medical Humanities faculty. A research paper also will be utilized as a primary basis for evaluation of student performance.

PREREQUISITES

  • Completion of all third-year clerkships
  • Enrollment in the MD/JD Dual Degree Program
  • Student and faculty must agree on a research topic before enrollment.
