Medicine/Psychiatry

Kathy Bottum, M.D., PhD is an Assistant Professor with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and SIU Physicians & Surgeons. She is a physician in the Division of Medicine/Psychiatry.

Dr. Bottum received her doctorate in biochemistry and her medical degree, both at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her residency in the combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Programs at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

Dr. Bottum specializes in general internal medicine and psychiatry. Medicine/Psychiatry is a specialty that seeks to facilitate an understanding of the relationship between physical and psychological/psychiatric symptoms. Many medical conditions have psychological as well as physical implications. Examples include the patient who experiences depression following a stroke; the patient with chronic renal failure who refuses dialysis; or, the patient with
diabetes mellitus and a borderline personality disorder who is noncompliant with treatment. Effective treatment for patients such as these usually requires attention to both their psychiatric and medical conditions. Dr. Bottum has a special interest in glutamate, neurotoxicity and neuroprotection, BDNF as a marker of depression and medical care of psychiatric patients.

Dr. Bottum is board-certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry/neurology. She sees patients in the SIU Clinics Building located at 751 North Rutledge Street in Springfield.
