Kent Kapitan, M.D. is an Associate Professor with the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and SIU Physicians & Surgeons.

Dr. Kapitan earned both his bachelor of science degree and his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He completed his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and two fellowships, one in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the other in Respiratory Physiology, at the University of California in San Diego. He also received the Clinical Investigative Award from the National Institutes of Health. Most recently, Dr. Kapitan was a pulmonary specialist at the Kansas City Pulmonary Clinic and served as the Pulmonary Section Chief at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. Kapitan is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. He is a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Kapitan sees patients in the SIU Clinics Building located at 751 North Rutledge Street in Springfield. He specializes in lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
