FOURTH YEAR ELECTIVE

Description:
This elective is offered in the SIU Dermatology Clinic where students will be given the opportunity to see a number of patients with a dermatologist. Diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases will be discussed. Techniques for performing diagnostic wet mounts and examination of these slides will be performed in the clinic. The medical student will spend most of the time in the outpatient clinic. The student is expected to spend remaining time doing assigned reading, reviewing the teaching collection of slides, attending specified resident conferences, and investigating a current dermatologic topic.

Objectives:
1. The student will become fluent in basic dermatologic vocabulary.
2. The student will develop a reasonable differential diagnosis for common skin lesions/eruptions.
3. The student will recognize the indications for skin biopsies, and various dermatologic therapies.

Evaluation:
1. Students will be evaluated by daily interactions with faculty and residents and a brief oral presentation summarizing their investigation of a current dermatologic topic.
2. A written examination and Kodachrome practical exam will be given at the end of the block.
3. The student will maintain a logbook of all patient encounters.
