The SIU Division of Dermatology
offers fourth year students a 4-week general dermatology elective.
During the rotation students spend a majority of their time seeing
patients in our general dermatology clinics. Assigned textbook reading
is provided during the elective time. There is an extensive kodachrome
study set available for independent review. We have several didactic
conferences during the week and most are tailored to include student
participation. These include weekly journal club, kodachrome conference,
lectures and monthly grand rounds. Students may also be involved
in evaluating hospital consults and rotating through the Mohs micrographic
surgery unit. If students have already completed a general dermatology
elective elsewhere, we do permit a shortened rotation (2 weeks)
which follows the same schedule as our 4-week elective.
Student evaluations will
be based, in part, on their clinical performance and participation
in conferences. They will also have time to prepare a brief presentation
on a topic of interest and present it during the final week at one
of our divisional conferences. Finally, we give a written multiple
choice and kodachrome examination based on the textbook reading
at the end of the rotation.
We have designed this
elective to give students the maximum exposure to general clinical
dermatology, while allowing time and providing motivation for independent
study of this complex specialty. The SIU faculty and residents hope
to familiarize rotating students with general dermatology language
and principles, to prepare them for whatever branch of medicine
they choose to practice.
Rotation spots are available
on a first-come first-served basis. We are not able to schedule
any outside rotators until the final SIU fourth-year electives have
been set (usually in early April). If you are interested in rotating
with us please contact Stacy
Miller (217-545-5465) and let her know the dates for which you
are interested. We keep a list of those students requesting a rotation,
the dates the requests were made and then contact everyone on the
list once we know the dates we have available.
Once we have confirmed
a block of time when you will be rotating, you will need to access
the Office of Student Affairs website at the following link and
read the guidelines for visiting medical students. http://www.siumed.edu/studentaffairs/vms.html
Plan to arrive at 8am
on the first Monday of your rotation. Our student coordinator, Stacy
Miller will introduce you to one of our chief residents, who will
give you a brief orientation. We are located at 751 N. Rutledge,
Room 2300, Springfield, IL 62702. Click here to

We look
forward to working with you during your time in Springfield and
will make every effort to make it a productive learning experience
for you!
Information
for Rotators Interested in Dermatology Residency Training:
I would like to clarify
our dermatology resident selection process for those of you who
are interested in pursuing a career in dermatology. We review every
completed application beginning in November of each year. All residents
and faculty meet and collectively select 25-30 candidates to invite
for an interview. Interview candidates are notified in early December
and interviews take place on most Fridays in January.
Selection for an interview
is not related to participating in an elective at our institution.
As mentioned above, we take those interested in doing an elective
on a first-come first-served basis when space is available. We have
no prerequisite qualifications for the elective, thus the rotation
is entirely independent of the application and interviewing process.
If, after review of your application, you are selected for an interview
you will be notified in early December. You are not required to
return for a formal interview unless you so choose. We will consider
you among the 25-30 applicants interviewed when we determine our
rank list, whether you return for an interview or not.
