PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING

  • Prostate cancer may be screened by using the Digital Rectal Exam (part of physical) and PSA blood test.
  • Screening for prostate cancer by rectal examination or PSA blood test can result in both false-positive and false-negative results.
  • The evidence we have does not support that either method reduces the risk of mortality.
  • The decision to screen for prostate cancer should be made only after discussion between an individual male patient and their Primary Care Provider.
  • The age group most likely to achieve possible benefit from prostate cancer screening is 50-69 years of age.
