GUIDELINES FOR PROPER NUTRITION

Generally a healthy diet will go a long way towards ensuring good health. Eating a variety of foods will ensure good nutrition.

  • Reduce fat in your diet, especially saturated fat.
  • Reduce cholesterol in your diet.
Choose: Decrease:
  • lean meat, fish and poultry (no skin)
  • dry beans and peas for protein
  • trim all visible fat off meat
  • whole milk, use low fat milk
  • cheese, egg yolks
  • butter, lard
  • fat rich pastry and desserts

 

Use the Food Pyramid

    Add:

    • Whole grains, 6 servings/day
    • Fruits, 2-4 servings/day
    • Vegetables, 5 servings/day

Bake, broil, or boil. Do not fry foods. Cholesterol and fat clogs up your arteries, increasing your risk of stroke and heart attack.

Say NO to Sodium/Salt
Salt can lead to increase in blood pressure and heart attack.

  • Avoid shaking salt on food.
  • Cook with low or no salt.
  • Use herbs, spices, etc. to flavor food.

Always Read Labels for Fat, Sodium and Cholesterol Contents

  • Women need to consume three dairy products/day to get the recommended calcium. This can, unfortunately lead to weight gain/kidney stones.
  • Calcium supplements may be taken. Ask your doctor for information.
  • Osteoporosis is commonly seen in women. Proper diet and exercise regimens are recommended for prevention.
