TAKING MEDICINE SAFELY

DO

  • Learn the names of medicine you are taking and why you are taking them.
  • Follow all your doctor's instructions about when to take your medicines and how much to take.
  • Know the possible side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you start to experience unpleasant or unusual side effects to a medicine.
  • Learn what foods, drinks, other medicines or activities to avoid when taking your medicines.
  • Keep all medicines out of reach of children and in childproof containers.
  • Store medicines in their original container in a cool, dry place. Always read the label for special storage instructions (such as refrigerator).
  • Bring your medications or a list of your medications any time you visit your doctor or go to the hospital.
  • Keep a medication record in your wallet (cards are available in the clinic).

DON'T

  • Don't take any medicine unless you understand all the instructions for using it safely.
  • Don't stop or change your medicine dosage without consulting your physician, even if you're feeling better.
  • Don't use another person's medications, and don't give yours to anyone else; it may be harmful.
  • Don't wait until your supply of medicine is empty to renew your prescription. Always have several days supply on hand, especially when traveling or during vacations and holidays.
  • Don't mix medicines with other medicines in the same bottle.
  • Don't keep old or outdated medicines that look changed or damaged. Discard by dumping them in the toilet and flushing.
  • Don't take medicines in the dark. Turn on the lights to avoid taking the wrong medicine.
  • Don't drink alcoholic beverages; don't drive or operate machinery while taking medications without first checking with your doctor.
  • Don't store medication in the bathroom cabinet. Heat and moisture may destroy the medicine.
