EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE
In this rotation, residents will improve their competency level in the management of inpatients. This will include not only patients from the SIU clinic, but patients admitted to the hosptialist service. Communication and continuity skills will be stressed, in addition to issues revolving around patient management.
TEACHING METHODS
Residents: Evaluate and manage patients admitted to the hospital with supervision by attending physician. Residents write initial H&P, daily orders, progress and procedure notes, and the discharge for each patient. Please refer to the Intern Guidelines for Ward Medicine document at the end of this section.

The Hospitalist service offers inpatient care and consultative care for inpatients. We admit patients from the SIU roster, usassigned patients from the ER, transfer patients from outlying hospitals and patients cared for by Springfield community physicians.

METHOD OF EVALUATION
Resident evaluation by standard performance evaluation form, direct observation, and written examination. Resident feedback by written evaluation and face-to-face meeting. Program and faculty evaluation by standard performance evaluation form.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION BY FACULTY
Residents
with little experience in the skills needed will observe and practice
physical exam skills under direct supervision of attending physicians,
while those with more experience will work with patients in concert
with attending physicians.
