Bullet Dr. David E. Steward, Professor and Chairman, has been elected as President of the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM) for the term July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. The APM is the organization of departments of internal medicine represented by chairs and appointed leaders at medical schools and affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada.

Bullet We are pleased to announce that Dr. Karen Broquet has been promoted to Professor of Clinical Medicine, and Dr. Christine Todd has been promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine. Dr. John Godwin, Professor of Medicine, has obtained tenure. Congratulations to all!

Bullet Andrzej Bartke, PhD has been named Chairperson of the Biological Aging Review Committee for the National Institute on Aging.

Bullet A team representing the Internal Medicine Residency program won the 2008 national ACP doctor's dilemma competition in Washington, DC. Team participants were Dr. Sudhir Hansalia, Dr. Jacob Mathew and Dr. Nishith Singh

Bullet We are pleased to announce the 2008 NRMP Match Results for the SIU School of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine residency program!

Bullet Laura Rogers, MD is conducting a study entitled, "Changes in cancer-related cytokines after a physical activity intervention (CICK)". This study will test the changes in cytokine markers of inflammation before and after participation in an exercise intervention for breast cancer survivors. It is being funded by the SimmonsCopper Cancer Institute.

Bullet Kathy Bottum, MD, PhD is the first recipient of the Clinician Scientist Research Award, which provides $80,000 for her research project “Mechanisms of Resistance to Exitotoxicity in Suprachiasmatic Nucleus.” Her mentoring team includes Shelley Tischkau, PhD, Pharmacology, and Andrzej Bartke, PhD, Laura Rogers, MD and David Resch, MD.
