STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) Clinic
History
Dr. Sergio Rabinovich started the STD free clinic about 30 years ago. This clinic was started in collaboration with the Springfield Public Health Department. The purpose of the clinic at its initiation was to provide teaching and hands on experience to the medical students and residents at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. At the same time, this was a much-needed service for the city of Springfield. For the last 25 years the clinic has been at 1415 East Jefferson Street in Springfield, Illinois. It is staffed by the faculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Nancy Khardori, M.D., and Janak Koirala, M.D., the pediatric Infectious Diseases physician, Dr. Subhash Chaudhary; the current Infectious Diseases Fellows; and the Chief Residents from the Department of Internal Medicine. Medical students from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years attend this clinic during ambulatory, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Obstetrics/Gynecology rotations. This experience has been consistently rated as one of the best in the SIU curriculum. In fact, many medical schools are now adding the STD experience to their curriculum because of the public health significance of this group of infections. This clinic is the only forum where residents from the Departments of Internal Medicine, OB-GYN, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine get hands on experience in the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted diseases.
Current Events
Testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis is routinely done as well as testing for HIV and Hepatitis A, B and C. Testing for herpes is not done, but herpes is treated. There is no charge for the testing or medication given (if available). The current hours for the STD clinic located at 1415 East Jefferson are:
Monday, - 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday - 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Friday - 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.Patients do not need an appointment, simply be there before 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.
