We offer a solid preliminary medicine residency which will prepare you for any of the advanced standing programs. Our Preliminary Medicine residents are treated similarly to those in the categorical medicine residents. Their rotations are similar with the possibility of scheduling a 1-month elective to coincide with ultimate career goals. The first year typically includes:
For those who are interested in one of the linked positions, an ERAS application should be submitted to the “home department”. It is not necessary to interview with the Department of Medicine, but you are certainly welcome to visit the Medicine program on your interview day if you wish. Please discuss this with the Residency Coordinator in the home program in order to coordinate this visit. Applicants interested in the freestanding preliminary medicine positions should submit their ERAS application to the department of Medicine. PGY 1 residents provide patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings under supervision by senior residents and clinical faculty. Rotations include:

Year:
PGY 2 residents obtain advanced training in internal medicine subspecialties and in the intensive care unit. They also provide back up nighttime call in hospitals on an occasional basis. Rotations in the second year include:

PGY 3 residents assume added responsibility as supervisors and teachers on the general medicine and intensive care services. Additional rotations are available in other related fields such as neurology, gynecology, orthopedics, or dermatology. The senior year schedule includes:
Continuity
Clinics:
Throughout the residency, residents will participate in continuity clinics on a one half-day per week basis, working in our internal medicine clinic with experienced general internists on the SIU full-time faculty. Research
opportunities are available to residents, with introduction
of opportunities to first-year residents midway into their first year,
and coordination of research interests and faculty mentors thereafter.
Research elective months can be arranged during the second or third
year.
Our formal didactic curriculum continues through the entire three-year residency and includes an exceptional series of Grand Rounds; a formal board review course with an extensive collection of practice questions; an evidenced-based journal club; weekly ambulatory conference, and related topics to round out a resident’s education.
