What to expect on your interview day:

Interview season runs from late November through the end of January. Interviews are conducted usually on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. We typically interview 4-6 applicants in a single day.

Accommodations are provided and we will make hotel reservations for applicants to be our guest at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel in downtown Springfield. Check in time for the hotel is 3:00 PM and is approximately 6 miles from the airport and a few blocks from the Amtrak station. Please let us know if you do not be need accommodations.

Applicants will have the opportunity to meet some of our current residents the night before at a dinner. The location is usually chosen by the residents and transport to and from the dinner place to the hotel is provided. This is optional for the applicants and is not used to make residency position decisions. If you have a guest accompanying you to Springfield, please invite them to join the dinner. We encourage applicants to dress comfortably and casually.

On the morning of the interview, the hotel shuttle departs at 7:30 and drives applicants to Memorial Medical Center. Our Program Director, Dr. Varney, starts the interview day with a slide show that describes the program. Each applicant has separate 20-minute interviews with the Program Director, a Chief Resident, and a third faculty member. Interviews do not involve asking medical questions. To the extent possible, all applicants will observe a portion of Morning Rounds. A resident-guided tour of Memorial Center and lunch with a small group of residents on campus rounds out the day. Occasionally, one of the faculty interviews or the tour is scheduled in the afternoon. Applicants are usually finished by 2pm. The hotel allows you to store your luggage following checkout or you may bring it to the interview if you need to go directly from the hospital to the airport, train or bus stations. The hotel shuttle, or residency staff will drive you back to the hotel.
