Springfield is a charming Midwest community conveniently located in Central Illinois just three hours south of Chicago and approximately 90 minutes north of St. Louis. The population of Springfield proper is 120,000 inhabitants, with an additional 125,000 in the surrounding communities.

The city offers an excellent public school system as well as Lincoln Land Community College, the University of Illinois at Springfield and several technical and business schools. The top employers in Springfield include State government and the health care industry, creating a solid economic base. In addition, Springfield has one of the most affordable housing markets in the country. Apartment and house rentals average $500-$800 a month depending on your needs. The low cost of real estate (average $100,000) coupled with attractive home mortgages (up to 100% financing with no PMI payment for qualified buyers) has allowed many residents to purchase homes. City owned utilities also help in keeping your monthly living costs low.

Recreation is abundant with all types of activities available. Scenic bike trails allow for safe biking, skating, jogging or running. Boating, swimming and water skiing is seasonally available at beautiful Lake Springfield. Golf is a major activity with at least ten golf courses in and around the city along with the annual LPGA tournament. The rich history of the city with the newly opened Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has made Springfield a very popular tourist destination.

Springfield offers a very active and diverse cultural life, with touring Broadway productions, the Illinois State Fair, annual festivals, amazingly creative local theatre, professional symphony, and a stimulating local music scene with jazz, rock and roll, roots, blues, and country music venues every night of the week.

Springfield is the home of outstanding parks, topnotch public and parochial schools, a large regional shopping mall and related commercial stores, and cultural and religious organizations of all kinds.

The city is easily accessible via I-55 which connects Springfield to both St. Louis and Chicago. The city operated airport services major carriers such as United Express and ATA. Additionally, the Amtrak station is located in the heart of the city, approximately 5 minutes from the medical center.
