GUIDELINES FOR VISITING MEDICAL STUDENTS
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU/SOM) wishes to encourage students from other medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to participate in senior electives courses at SIU School of Medicine. Application may also be considered from students from institutions with which SIU/SOM has a standing clinical electives exchange program.
The enrollment period for visiting students will begin immediately after completion of the enrollment period for SIU students, usually early to mid-June. Arrangements for acceptance into a particular elective course must be made through the Clerkships and Electives Registrar in the Office of Education and Curriculum after approval as a visiting medical student is received from Jennifer Langley, Registrar, in the Office of Student Affairs.
To be approved for elective study at SIU/SOM, a visiting medical student must:
- be at the MS4 (senior) level;
- be in good academic standing;
- have successfully completed the equivalent of any prerequisites listed for the desired course prior to actually participating in the elective experience and;
- provide documentation of immunizations.
Foreign students: In addition to the requirements listed above, foreign students must be in their final year of training in order to participate in our electives program. If approved for elective study, foreign students will be enrolled in the specific elective course(s) ONLY; they are not enrolled in the medical school. We also require that foreign students provide information regarding their proficiency in the English language.
Requests for applications and guidelines for visiting medical students should be directed to Jennifer Langley, Registrar, in the Office of Student Affairs. Arrangements regarding faculty and departmental approval for visiting medical students will be negotiated by Cris Milliken, Clerkships and Electives Registrar, in the Office of Education and Curriculum. The student and his/her school will be notified whether the application is approved or denied.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL PAPERWORK MUST BE SUBMITTED THREE (3) WEEKS PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE ELECTIVE EXPERIENCE.
SIU/SOM has no "official housing" available for visiting medical students. The student will be responsible for travel and living expenses. There are no fees or tuition charged to visiting medical students.
If a student accepted for elective study at SIU/SOM must cancel his/her participation in the course for any reason, the Registrar in the Office of Student Affairs should be notified in writing as soon as possible.
