Basic Search Tips

 

Symbol Purpose Example

+ (plus sign) & - (minus sign)

 

Use in front of words to force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches.

+anorexia -bulimia
"   " (double quotation marks) Use around phrases to ensure they are searched exactly as is, with the words side by side in the same order.
 
"Central Nervous System"
* Stands for any letter(s) or variations in spelling and word form.
 
eye* returns both eye & eyes
leuko* returns leukocyte, leukosis, etc.
AND, OR, NOT Use in boolean searches to include or exclude words.  For search engines to recognize this command, use all caps.
 
eating disorder AND (bulimia OR anorexia)
link: Use to find other pages that link to a page already found that also contains the subject being searched.

title: Narrows a search to look for pages that have that word in their title.

domain:

Limits the search to a specific domain.
