The Annual Epilepsy Education Evening event took place on July 17th at 6:00pm. The event featured "Treatment of Seizures and Epilepsy" and was held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3100 South Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois. This was a community event and open to the public.
Dr. Yen-Yi Peng, Adult Neurologist and Epileptologist and Dr. Shubhangi Peche, Child and Adolescent Neurologist with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine provided information on seizures, their impact on quality of life and treatment options for children and adults. The presentation was followed by an "Ask the Doctor" session for questions about epilepsy.
Nearly three million individuals are affected by epilepsy with 200,000 new diagnoses of epilepsy occurring each year. Of these three million people, at least one third do not respond fully to medications alone. For those individuals who continue to have seizures, it is important to take steps to diagnose and prevent seizures as much as possible. By learning about the different treatment options available, many patients are able to reach these goals as well as improve their overall quality of life.
