Hypoglycemia and seizures

Q: Are you aware of any connection between hypoglycemia and seizues? They occur right around the time he wakes up. My son is 16 and has had 2 episodes. Thank you.

A: Seizures can occur as a result of severly low glucose, but unless your son is on insulin, it is unlikely that this is the cause. However, it is common for seizures to occur during transition to sleep, ie, upon wakening or during drowsiness and some of the epilepsies are noted for their tendency to specifically cause seizures upon awakening.
