When can I drive again?

Q: I had my first seizure at age 55 --- a grand mal. I am currently taking Dilantin and Neurontin. My seizures are very mild now but I cannot drive. What is the general rule about driving?

A: Driving rules vary from state to state, and you would need to check with your own state for specific regulations. Most states require that persons with epilepsy are "controlled," meaning you may not have any episodes of loss of consciousness for at least 6 - 12 months, depending on the state. If your seizures become controlled for a long period of time, you should ask your physician when you may again resume driving.
