40th Anniversary of SIU School of Medicine : 1970 - 2010
June, 1968
Education in the Health Fields for Illinois (called the “Campbell Report”) is published, directing SIU to start a medical school and graduate its first class by 1978.
January 1970
Richard H. Moy, M.D., is appointed as the first Dean of the Southern Illinois School of Medicine.
December 11, 1970
SIU School of Medicine signs affiliation agreement with Memorial and St. John’s Hospitals outlining future relationships.
July 1971
Departments of Medical Education and Medical Humanities open, another example of SIU educational innovation. Also, a letter of acceptance was sent to the first student.
February 17, 1972
The School of Medicine's first Continuing Medical Education Conference was held in Carbondale.
May 1972
Springfield Family Practice Center begins seeing patients. The residency program is accredited and the first residents began training in July.
September 1972
MEDPREP, the Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program to help educationally disadvantaged students prepare for professional schools, begins with 13 in Carbondale.
March 1973
Fifteen residency positions are filled in the School’s first Match Day.
February 1974
Students and staff move into the first permanent campus building in Springfield at 801 North Rutledge.
June 1975
Commencement of the first graduating class is held in the rotunda of the State Capitol
October 1976
SIU School of Medicine becomes the first medical school to publish detailed objectives of the entire curriculum.
March 1977
The first issue of ASPECTS, the magazine of SIU School of Medicine published
April 1977
The Board of Trustees ratified agreements between the School of Medicine and six hospitals in Belleville, Decatur and Quincy for Family Practice residency programs.
August 1978
The Quincy Family Practice Center opens. The residency program is accredited in 1979.
February 1979
The Alumni Society is formed and the first Society-sponsored reunion is held at Lake Springfield in May.
September 1979
The first Doctors Fair is held.
November 1980
The Pearson Medical History Museum is dedicated.
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine ranks as one of the fortunate few medical schools to have a history museum on its campus. Since its official dedication in 1980, the Pearson Museum has been not only a repository for the display of medical and scientific artifacts, but also a classroom for sharing the heritage of healing with faculty, medical students, and the interested public.
