Dr. Edward J. Alfrey Dr. Edward Alfrey portrai has joined the faculty at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as professor and chair of the general surgery division.  His practice includes general surgery and he specializes in kidney/pancreas transplantation.  He has a special interest in hepatobiliary surgery, particularly regarding tumors of the liver and complex biliary reconstruction.

Alfrey recently completed a master’s degree in health care management from Harvard University in Boston, Mass. (2005).  He served a two-year fellowship in liver, pancreas, and kidney transplantation at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. (1990).  Alfrey completed his residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson (1989).  He received his medical degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder (1984) and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver (1976).

Alfrey is board certified in general surgery.  He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Transplantation, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and American Association of Immunologists.

Alfrey has published numerous articles and book chapters and has multiple research interests including liver transplant immunology, renal physiology and clinical outcomes.
