Dr. M. Samer Ammar

has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor in pediatrics, specializing in pediatric gastroenterology. He is one of the new pediatric specialists recruited for St. John’s Children’s Hospital, a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Most recently, Ammar was a pediatric gastroenterologist at DeVos Children’s Hospital at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids.
Ammar completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University in Indianapolis and his pediatric residency at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport. He earned his medical degree at Damascus University School of Medicine in Damascus, Syria (1991).
He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology by the American Board of Pediatrics and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and the American Gastroenterological Association. His publications include his research interest on the effectiveness of biofeedback in children.
A native of Syria, Ammar is married to Manal Ramadan and has two children.
