Dr. Sangita Basnet has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, specializing in pediatric critical care medicine. She is one of the new pediatric specialists recruited as part of St. John’s Children's Hospital, a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Basnet also is continuing on the medical staff at Capitol Community Health Center in Springfield. She was associate director of critical care services at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Champaign (2005) and was a consultant pediatric intensivist at Gangalal National Heart Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal (2003).

She completed a three-year fellowship in critical care at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (2002) and a three-year pediatric residency at Cook County Children's Hospital in Chicago (1999). She earned her medical degree at Tribhuvan University, Institute of Medicine in Kathmandu, Nepal (1992).

Basnet is board certified in pediatric critical care medicine and pediatrics. She has published scientific articles and is a member of Society of Critical Care Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics. Her clinical research interests include pediatric critical care.

A native of Nepal, Basnet is married to Dr. Janak Koirala also a faculty member at SIU. They have two children.
