Dr. Shingo Chihara has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of internal medicine, specializing in infectious diseases. He also is a member of SIU HealthCare, the medical school’s practice group.
Chihara previously served as assistant professor in the infection control and clinical laboratory medicine department at Dokkyo Medical University in Japan (2009-11).
He completed a fellowship in medical microbiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City (2009) and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Rush University Medical Center, John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago (2008). He completed his residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program (2006). Chihara completed post-graduate training at Iizuka Hospital in Japan (2002). He earned his medical degree at Yamanashi Medical University in Japan (1999).
Chihara is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine with a subspecialty certificate in infectious diseases and by the American Board of Pathology in pathology with a subspecialty certificate in medical microbiology. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the College of American Pathologists and the American College of Physicians. Chihara has been published in several professional journals.
