Dr. Jeffrey W. Cozzens has joined the faculty at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as professor and chair of the neurosurgery division. He has a special interest in surgery for epilepsy, brain tumors and Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders as well as microsurgery of the spine.
Prior to joining SIU, Cozzens was associate professor of neurosurgery at Northwestern University (NU) Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago (1985-2009). He was also director of medical student and resident teaching for the neurosurgery division at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston.
Cozzens has completed two fellowships – one in epilepsy and stereotactic neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis (1985) and the second in trauma neurosurgery at Cook County Hospital in Chicago (1984). He completed his neurosurgery residency at NU (1984). He earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago (1978). He earned a bachelor’s degree from Reed College in Portland, Oregon (1974).
Cozzens is board certified in neurological surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of several medical societies including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Epilepsy Society, North American Spine Society and American Society of Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery. His research interests include brain tumors, movement disorders and epilepsy surgery.
